All batteries vent when they get warm, and that venting contains the water/acid vapor. The vapor settles on the posts and cables and corrodes the metal, creating lead hydroxide and various copper hydroxides. These show up as greenish and whitish powders. It isn't a sign of a dying battery, just one that has been there for a while.
There are felt pads you can buy to put over the posts - they contain chemicals that neutralize the acid - basically (pun!) baking soda.
And sealed batteries aren't sealed - they still vent. Just not as much. As batteries charge, the heat can cause the electrolyte to evaporate. SERVICING the battery is the incredibly high-tech task of adding a little more fluid. Since mostly water evaporates, this involves adding some distilled water if necessary.
Sealed batteries still boil off electrolyte - when it gets too low, you don't service the battery - you replace it.
