Just replaced the engine

So I just replaced the engine in my 95 CSE. Is it normal for the check engine "light" to be on? The car had sat since late sep. I also noticed the rotten egg smell, which I assume is from the catalytic converter. SO I am assuming the engine is running either rich or lean. Should I just drive it around and let the computer re learn the engine mapping? Oh and is the idle adjustable? It is idling around 1500rpms.
