Total disassembly?????
You'll have to remove the outer joint to get the new boots in place. There's really no more to take apart. Why you would be willing to go to all that work and not take a little extra time to clean the joint baffles me. I let the outer soak in a bucket of fuel oil, move the joint around (but not too far in any direction), let soak a little longer and repeat. Blow them out with air (messy) or let them air drain/dry. Most of the new grease can be squeezed in through the hole that the axle goes into. just work the joint to get in all in. Don't do anything but wipe off the inner, and be careful not to let the outer caps fall of any of the tripods. There are a ton of little needle bearings in there.
Don't be surprised to find locktite on the splined shaft where it goes through the bearing assembly. I've seen this on more than one 96. Don't use a mallet, just a puller to push the shaft out. If you find locktite, you'll need to scrape the residue off both the shaft and the inner race to get the shaft to slide back into place. A wire brush won't touch the stuff.
