Aftermarket Stereo Installation Questions

My car is a '96 9000 CSE with the original Clarion cassette/cd unit (with amp under the passenger seat). I need to replace the CD unit because it no longer works and I have several questions that could not be answered by an involved search of this BB. I am going to replace the unit with a standard aftermarket brand.
1. Is there a way to connect a new CD deck to the existing and original working cassette deck? It would be nice to keep that functionality.
If not, two different wiring harness kits from Crutchfield are possiblities: one for Saabs '86 and newer and one labeled "VW/Audi wiring harness" on the Crutchfield site. The former was recommended through this BB, the latter from the folks at Crutchfield.
2. Which wiring kit should I use?
3. Since I am armed with a Haynes wiring diagram and only limited electrical DIY knowledge, what is the easiest installation for me?
I don't mind a barely noticeable compromise in sound quality if the installation time is dramatically reduced. If the sound quality is reasonable when the amp is bypassed, I am willing to consider this option, too.
Thanks,
Mike
