new heater core...strange smell?

After thirteen years, the old heater core finally gave out, and was recently replaced. Now there's a smell in the car. Hard to describe: sort of plasticky; a little smoky but more like distant filtered smoke than something actually burning. It's there from startup and intensifies slightly as the car runs. I find it very unpleasant. Can I expect the smell to begin to fade as the heater core gets more use, or is it time to take the car back to the shop?
1995 9K Aero, automatic, 139K miles. Recent heat repairs in addition to heater core included new engine thermostat and rebuilt ACC. Now I have heat and defrosting again! But this bad smell too :(
Thanks
