The sensor for the temperature gauge is on the side of the block, over the transmission. The sensor for the ECU is mounted under the intake manifold.

The difference isn't the sensor. The difference is the software between the sensor and the temperature gauge. The sensor signal goes to the EDU board, where there is a little processor that drives the gauge. (same with fuel level). I'm not sure of all the inputs the software algorithm uses - it may take road speed into account. It may hold the temperature reading relatively flat for temps from 89 to 97C, and then ramp up quickly for temps from 97C to 105C (remember, a pressurized system can operate above 100C and not boil over). I'm just guessing at those numbers.

The bottom line is that the software in the EDU massages the heck out of the temperature signal to remove the normal variations you'd see if the gauge were directly tied to the sensor (like in older cars). With older cars, you could actually see the first time the thermostat opened on a cold day, etc. Great for motorheads like us. Not so great for the majority of folks that start to worry when a gauge swings around a lot, or starts to get near red. Saab took out a lot of that information to avoid the amount of stuff Service Managers were hearing about the temp gauge moving.
