Manual gearbox, Aero. lost 4th gear

Today, when doing a normal shift into fourth gear, it didn't catch. No fourth gear. Neutral. This is a '94 Aero w/ about 185000 miles.
I went back to third and that was gone too! So, 1,2&5 worked. Then 3 came back, so now I'm only missing 4th.
I've read lots of posts here and the consensus seems to be that a worn out or otherwise maladjusted shifter link can cause this problem, but the problem would affect ALL shifting, not just that within one column, like 3&4. So I figure the tranny may be ready for a cash infusion.
Leading up to this, I've noticed #4 synchro is the worst and it seems to be getting worse over recent weeks. Also, when shifting into 4th, the shifter doesn't really seem to catch. You press it there and it would stay, but it didn't feel like it locked into place, as it does on a solid manual tranny. (I've noticed that shifting into #2 feels like that too. Maybe the problem IS related to the shifter connection.
The questions at hand:
Q1: I'll look at the shift link and motor/trans mounts tomorrow. Is there any reasonable chance one of them could cause a 3-4 only problem?
Q2: Assuming there is a problem inside the box, and since enough gears work to drive the car, can I take my sweet time finding a used or rebuilt box, or should I positively not trust this car on the road? (I have no problem staying within 20 miles of home or so.)
Q3: Any recommendations for someone in the Mpls, St Paul area to investigate this?
Thank you all.
Tom
