This should be the same for any >1995 car and possibly before that too (I've only personal experience of 1995 on)
For anyone who has obtained a car where the previous owner says:
"I had an upgraded MP3 unit fitted, which I've taken out, the original one is in the dash but not connected"
in my experience actually means:
"I couldn't figure out how the radio works as when I plug all the plugs in, it just makes an awful loud hum when I either turn the radio on OR if I turn the lights on, so the radio is probably screwed"
here's the tips:
If you don't have a CD player in dash or CD changer in boot, then you only need 2 of the plugs connected to the radio, the grey and the pink.
The pink is larger and would only go in the one slot, then leave the next socket empty and put the grey one in the bottom socket. You will probably be staring at a tan/brown colour plug and assuming it should also fit in the middle socket as I did, which is wrong.
If you stick your hand in the hole in the dash for the radio and fish around with a torch, you should spy a similar looking brown plug (which has probably been the source of that annoying dash rattle?). The brown plug and brown socket mate together.
So, with just the pink and grey plugs connected to the radio (and don't forget the antenna), leave the radio hanging down or slotted slightly into the radio hole, turn the radio power on. It should say "CODE IN" on the display. enter the 4 digit radio code and it should leap into life. If so, you are done and can push the radio back into the dash until it latches.
I'm not sure what the symptoms are if the little 3 amp fuse in the rear of the radio blows, but if you have display but no noise, or no display then I'd check that fuse before condemning the radio.
For those who DO have an in-dash CD player or a CD changer in boot/trunk, I'll have to suggest that you search the board unless someone posts an update in this thread?
I hope that helps someone?
