Very high fuel consumption readout from EDU

Hi guys,
The car is a '95CDE A/T with 180K miles, in pretty good order overall.
Recently the fuel consumption readout on the EDU has been reading greatly high to more about x5-6 times.
- For example, my instantaneous MPG usually runs about 30-35 MPG on constand 50MPH driving, now it just drop to about 8-10 MPG!
- The average fuel consumption does readout very high consumption too. Today I was driving on an open highway at 50-70 MPH and it's showing something average about 9.5-10 MPG! (It never get below 15 MPG Average spending time in this car for almost 10 years, even in urban driving!)
I did observe the actual fuel gauge readout during my trip. It seems that the gauge does not move that much, and I would say the actual fuel consumption is about as same as before problem occured. Open the hood to check found nothing wrong.
Can anyone suggest why the average fuel consumption readout might go wrong?, even though the car is still managing to work out the instantaneous fuel consumption correctly?
The most concerning thing is should the car still be driven regularly even the readout on EDU went wrong? Will it be anything wrong with the engine (too lean/too rich) upon driving with the erratic EDU readout?
TIA Guys!
