I just had the same thing happen to me last week as I was driving to work. Interior cabin air started to get cold (even though ACC on "HI"), battery light came on, then steering got real hard. The coolant temp gauge started rising and that's when I realized the belt must have snapped. Got off the highway and turned into the nearest parking lot before the temp hit "H".
Idler pulley was completely obliterated, save for a few bearings still inside the metal sleeve that was attached to the bracket. Got a lift home to get my spare parts and put the old pulley back on (I never throw anything out). Serp belt was okay, as was the tensioner pulley.
I replaced these parts 70K miles ago, and at that time the original parts had 65K on them, so I guess the replacements had hit their limit.
I did a search on the board for what to do about replacing the tensioner shock. There was a good write up by Ari on how to test the old one. I figured since there is 135K on mine, I might as well replace it for peace of mind. It is pricey, even through a site sponsor. I only purchased the shock portion, not the whole assembly.
