backfire while shifting...

I've been driving turbo SAABs for almost 20 years and have never had a backfire while shifting up after moderate to hard acceleration. I now also own a Mazdaspeed Miata which is also a turbo, and have started hearing a Pop while upshifting after getting the revs moderately high but not close to WOT. I posted on the MSM net and everyone there thinks this is normal and I shouldn't be concerned. I think they're nuts. (Sorry I know this is a bit off topic so far, but bare with me...)
Can backfire (or "afterfire" as they call it, saying only lawnmowers "backfire") do any damage as a regular occurrence? I think it can for several reasons, but wanted some other educated opinions. It seems it would not pass a Cal Smog Inspection if it dumps enough raw fuel to pop off. Also, it seems like there would be lots of other collateral damage to this condition if it was a common occurrence. Wouldn't it damage the Cat and maybe the O2 sensor?
I'd appreciate any comments despite the marq deviation; I think it will apply to any installation. Thanks!
