All:
Last October I lost top gear while driving on a long trip taking my son on college visits. With the help of y'all I figured out that the radiator had gone south, allowing cooling line for ATF inside the radiator to leak into coolant.
So in October I replaced rad, flushed system, new ATF. all well ever since..
However, that was only 6 months ago and only 6000 miles on the new radiator.
For the past week I was on another long trip -- weirdly enough, another trip to visit colleges where Owen had been accepted . . . is there some linkage between colleges and transmission failure?! -- and coming home today i once again lost top gear. COne moment everything was fine, next moment when i accelerated from a stop the tranny would not shift down into 4th. I checked coolant reservoir and sure enough, coolant is contaminated, just as it was last fall.
What the !#$%^&* is going on here!?! Is is just bad luck that a new radiator would have the identical failure after such a short time? Or is there something else going on with the car that isalso taking out the radiator as a side effect?
Thanks for any input. 1998 CSE fpt auto tranny 127k miles.
Also, no heat during the period when the tranny lost top gear, which was the last 2 hours of this 1000-mile trip. temp gauge reading normally in its acccustomed place, which on this car is about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way from C to H. Is this a coincidence or might it be some indication of something else going on that would cause the rad cooler to rupture? Seems to me there couldn;t be any connection, but i'm no expert.
