Carl,
I have a '93 Aero. Despite the doomsday stories about TCS, I've never had so much as a hicup. I suspect that some cars have issues (and they are serious) and others just don't.
As with all car purchases, find out if the car has records. Is the engine swap documented? Are oil changes documented? Any maintenance records at all?
Check all the fluids. When driving it, go from reverse to forward, and listen. Also, turn the wheel lock-to-lock and listen. Control arm bushings or CV joints can make popping/clicking sounds.
Anyway, best of luck. All the Aeros are great cars. I, for one, never look at a '97 longingly, unless it's cleaner and nicer than mine. But I do like my glove compartment.
