You can get a general indication of timing chain health with the valve cover off. Turn the engine to TDC for cylinder #1. Look at the side of the camshaft away from the gears. You'll see the alignment marks - a line on the shafts, a "V" on the bearing blocks. If both lines fall within the width of the "V"s on the blocks, the chain is in decent shape. Also, inspect what you can of it for wear. Does it look worn? A "stretched" chain (worn) won't line up well.
As the others have mentioned, the chain is only part of the story. If the chain is worn, so will be the guides and gears. Replacing just one doesn't make a lot of sense, not if you're investing the money and time for a HG. But if the chain is OK, leave it be.
