pin on flywheel

I've just looked at the flywheels on three of our five 9000 T's. Two of them have pins at 10 degrees PAST TDC. (1986, 1987). The third one, another '86, has a hole instead of a pin. (Pin fell out?).
So, what is this pin for? A signal source for a possible future crankshaft position sensor? All our 9kt's (86 to 89) have distributor position advances.
