The Saab publicity material I have for for the CS shape cars typically has the following 0-60 times:

200bhp Manual 7.2 sec
200bhp Automatic 8.1 sec
225bhp Manual 6.7 sec

I don't have the old-shape figures to hand, or any difference between Griffins and lesser versions, but I see that Road & Track reckoned they got to 60 in 6.8 seconds from a 200bhp turbo 9000 hatch. And of course Car & Driver reported they squeezed 0 to 60 in 6.2 seconds out of a 1993 Aero. Je m'en doute, but that's what they said.

But as we all know these differences are small both on paper and in the real world, one less-than perfect gearshift will eat up a second (R&T said "the shifter draws mixed reviews") and the testers are caning the cars to get the figures anyway.

So an auto transmission means the performance is fully accessible, and it pretty well soaks up turbo lag. Smoother, and easier on your passengers, too. But you do pay for it in fuel, particularly around town where nobody's going anywhere fast anyway.
