When keeping it real goes wrong.
So I'm on the Lodge in Detroit. I see some idiot coming up the right lane trying to pass me when theres room on the left, I hit the gas with out down shifting, assuming he'll back off.. he doesn't. Slams into my passenger side front end, hits the wheel more than anything else, pushes my car over to the left (im in the middle lane) and keeps going, i hit the gas, my car just revs, I take it out of gear and put it back in, nothing, i throw it in 4th and it halls like a bat outa hell (I was going about 75 to begging with, I probably slowed to ~55). At this point I'm just pissed as hell. I just put a new trans in this car from a parts car that I bought because the original trans blew up, along with the trans I put in a aluminum flywheel, and performance clutch and pressure plate from Swedish Dynamics -very helpful. So I'm in 4th gear at wot catching up to this jackass in this expedition. Fords SUVs needless to say are not Saabs and even with a huge lead I easily catchup to him, for about half a mile I'm next to this guy honking my horn, i wont get into how fast I was going or what I did next, but my point is that these ZF transmissions are not pieces of crap, they're actually pretty dang good transmissions, I've heard a lot about them being no good... I think its more that the engines are very very strong and the transmissions end up being the weak link after time.

Also the 5th gear input gear, output gear, synchro ring, springs, etc, hub, essentially everything for 5th gear can be replaced on these transmissions while still in the car. I just took off my driver side wheel and undid the cover bolts, undid the tranny mount, hammered a piece of a 2 x 4 between the tranny case and frame, and took off the cover, pry up at the mount and rotate the cover and mount clockwise and lift it off. Everything else under the cover should be easy. My accident trashed the inside diameter splines on my 5th gear on the output shaft, my synchro held up strong and its splines are fine. To take the gear and synchro off of the input shaft you'll need a heavy duty circlip remover, a regular one will not work, i tried for 30 minutes, got nowhere, first try with a new heavy duty remover got it. My locknut had actually backed off the output shaft and was sitting in the case on the end of the shaft, the output 5th gear is wasted, i could spin the rotor and see the output shaft spinning while the output shaft gear did not move - all while 5th gear was engaged of course.

Hope someone finds this useful.

Oh yea- If someone hits your car, and you catch up to them and they still don't stop - chances are their car is stolen, they don't have insurance, or they have multiple warrants out for their arrest.

Cost for DIY repair - about $130. $90 for gear, 20 for locknut, 10 for loctite anaerobic sealer for the trans case.
