I don't feel Toyota's more reliable than Saab

I've had two Toyota's and one Saab. One 1987 Corolla, one 1989 Supra, one 1996 9-3, one 1996 9000CSE. The Corolla was, of course, the most reliable one. It was nothing but a small tin can on four wheels, with a small engine. What can possibly go wrong anyway? The Supra, on the other hand, had many more problems. At last it blew its headgasket at the mileage of 150k. The 9000, which I currently have, turns out much more reliable than the Supra, and at least as reliable as my friend's Camry. With 170k miles, the only major fix I've done was a dead DI at 120k (and previous owner did it at 60k). The previous owner did fuel pump at 90k. And that's it. All other repairs are routine for all cars -- belts, hoses, engine mounts, etc. The reason many dread about Saab's are not they break more, but for the same type of repair, a shop usually charges much more for an European car.

When I just had the Saab, many people told me that they are weird cars and many shops won't work on them, and I believed. Now that having it for two years and put 60k miles, and done some works myself, I found it no difference from most other cars mechanically and any good shop should be able to work on them. The engine control may be a bit challenge though.

My car, being 12 years old and with 170k miles, probably won't fetch $2k on market. But its paint still shines much better than 90% 5 years old American cars, and the seat back still push my back like a jet on runway when I boost her up. I do most routine maintenance myself so the cost of owning is really low. I really don't what other car can give me such a good amount of pleasure with so little cost economically.
