Bill, it's too late to check now since head, manifold and turbo are all back on. However, I think I would have recognized broken studs right away. Have seen, and removed enough of them (though none on 9000's)! The "depressions" were part of the Al alloy head. In retrospect, I regret not putting it under magnification in case someone "topped up" broken stud holes with some aluminum looking filler. If that's the case, they did a terrific job to make it look as part of the casting. But, why would anyone do that? Since this is one of our spare 9000's I'll hold off for a while, maybe more info might appear. In any case, we have a mystery, and I'm not beyond taking the head off again to satisfy my curiosity.
I am aware of Anders' post, but none of our six 9000's (from 86 to 89) ever gave any stud trouble, so I always put the spacers back on. Sure curios though, from an engineering standpoint why the center top stud, for example, is short.
