I am looking at the same job on my 1990 hatchback. I did this once on my 1991 9000 by removing the top frame member, and that is not something I am ever going to do again. The fan won't go out the bottom, but I believe that is how it is done on the CS models (1993 and later).
This time I'm going to drain the coolant, remove the radiator, then take out the intercooler. I don't want to remove the A/C condenser and recharge the system (it's still R-12), but I think I can pull the driver's side of the condenser toward the engine, slide the fan to the driver's side, then pull the fan up, either through the gap or angled out the front where the grill is.
We'll see if that works, I guess.
