There's already a lot of good info posted in response to your inquiry, but I Think that one thing has slipped by (And maybe you already know this).
The '98 CSE is mechanically identical to an Aero, with 225HP in the 5-speed cars, and the 16" running gear. It's missing the body work and seats that the Aeros would have. A 5-spd Aero/98 CSE is faster than a pre-98 CSE.
The Anniversary model in '97 came with 16" wheels, the Aero body work, and embroidery on the seats with the old Saab airplane logo. Otherwise it's a CSE.
As for the maintenance, I think Ari hit it on the head. If you're willing to maintain these cars, they rarely leave you stranded. Parts are easy to come by and don't seem too unreasonably priced. eEuroparts will be your friend. I've done nearly all the work on my car since I bought it nearly 5 years ago... including a head gasket.
As for things that can leave you stranded:
Get a spare DI cassette off ebay or something and keep it in the trunk.
Fuel pump failures can leave you high and dry.
Serpentine belts/pulleys (if neglected) can surprise you.
Anyway, enjoy your new car, and keep us all posted as to what you get.
