I would disagree with your statement that the 9000s are heavy cars. Maybe compared to a Honda Civic, but not when you compare them to comparable size European cars.

If you were to compare a 1997 9000 to a comparable BMW 5 series you would note the following curb weights:
1997 9000 curb weight - ranging from 3,130 pounds to 3,340 pounds
1997 BMW 528 curb weight - 3,450 pounds
1997 BMW 540 curb weight - 3,748 pounds

I would expect that if you did similar comparisons to comparable Mercedes and Audi models you would also find that Saabs are lighter than those cars. Given Saab's original aircraft heritage, I cannot imagine that they would design vehicles which were heavier than their competitors.
