Confusing no start problem

After running just fine for a long time, I parked for a short while. Upon restarting, the car died shortly thereafter. Multiple cranks didn't result in anything. The starter motor and battery were alive and cranking well, just nothing caught. After taking off the DI cassette, I extracted a spark plug and didn't see or smell any fuel, so I guessed that it was fuel related.
I let the car sit for a few days, then came back to it once I had a new fuel system relay in hand. After installing, I was happy to find the car started. However, there was a slightly odd noise, almost like valve clatter on an old VW or Subaru, or perhaps a bit like a belt noise (increased with the RPMs, etc). I temporally ignored that so I could get the car home, but to no avail. After about a mile, the car was losing power, so I found a good parking spot, just in time for it to die and not restart!
Could this be a weak fuel pump? Am I on the right track with thinking it's fuel related? Any help would be great. Thanks all,
'90 9kt, 150,000 miles.
Fairly new DI cassette, NGK plugs, fuel pressure regulator all in the last 10,000 - 15,000 miles. Yep, there's also fuel in the tank.
