The DI-equipped engines (like yours) were designed to work ONLY with the specified NGK plugs. Bosch claimed to have come out with a DI-compatible plug a few years back, but I don't know if they're still around.
The DI uses the spark plug to detect a pre-knock condition, and for things like engine timing. The plug is part of the system with the DI.
Bottom line is that Saab doesn't recommend any plug but the specified NGKs. And if you are having ignition issues, the first step is to eliminate variables, and having non-standard plugs is a variable.
The engine works quite well with NGKs - there is no real advantage trying others not specified. Other plugs might work as well, or might work much, much worse. None would likely be better. So why mess around?
