Holes between the resonator and the muffler can make a lot of noise. And I suspect that you've got holes in the resonator, also. Look closely at where the pipes come into the resonator - that's a common place for leaks. If the exhaust is cool, start the car and hold your hand near the pipe- I bet you feel exhaust pulses where the pipe meets the resonator.
If you're going to take out the exhaust, just put in a new one. Taking out an exhaust is the hardest part of exhaust replacement, and usually invovles destroying it.
I just buy a new exhaust system from behind the catalytic converter back. All you need to do is remove the two bolts at the rear of the cat, and take out the rest of the exhaust. I usually jack up (and support!) the left rear, take off the left rear tire, and cut the pipe that goes over the axle with a sawzall. Installing all new parts is easy. Getting old parts apart without damage is darn near impossible, and fitting new to old is insanity.
