I had this exact issue on my wife's 98 CSE. It turned out to be a flaky connection within the EDU - I bought a used one from somebody who was parting their 9k on TSN classifieds and now everything is hunkydory.
It is actually more likely that it is the connector to the EDU (electronic display unit) that is bad and reseating it may solve all your problems (didn't work for me). To do this you will need to take the dashtop off. If you've never done this before it's not such a big deal. I believe full instructions are at http://www.quasimotors.com.
It probably makes sense to remove and replace all of the instrument panel connectors while you are in there, but the one you are after is a large one at the bottom left (as you are looking from the driver's seat). You need to release a tab at one end and swing it up off the EDU.
Hope this works for you.
