'96. It bugs me, so I pulled the rear felt-and-cardboard panel, then pulled the latchworks itself.
Two microswitches, one triggers the unlatching motor, the other should indicate the latched state. That one looks fine, plunger goes in and out as it should, latch pieces look fine and tight and move thru their motions just fine. (Cleanest interior of a door I've ever seen in a car, a real pleasure to deal with, not the usual dusty filthy greasy rusty mess.)
I didn't have a meter so I didn't check ths switch, supper was ready so I had to put it all back together till tomorrow eve. But with it all unplugged from the car, no "unlatched hatch" indication on the little outline of the car. So it seems plain to me, that microswitch isn't opening when it is supposed to and when it appears to have moved enough that it should have.
I first thought it might be the leads crimped together and shorting, or something. Nipped a wire tie, slit the wire loom, found the two leads to the switch fused together by design, kind of like zip cord lamp cords. I slit the two apart to make sure they weren't shorting, but no difference. If it is that switch (how could it be otherwise?) what a pain it's gonna be to fix. I doubt they sell it separately.

I'll get out the meter tomorrow and go to town on it. News story to follow, maybe.
Also, of course I'll do a search here first.
