Fuel Pump Feed vs Return?

1st of all, let me say whomever designed the Fuel Pump Lock Ring had to be working for the devil because that sucker took me 3 hours to get off. I had to design a tool with steel and a welder and eventually weld a nut on top of that and use my impact wrench to get it off. Geez. What a job.

But in the process, I snapped off the little plastic check valve that goes into the top of the fuel pump. I need to know which is the feed and which is the return. I snapped the black one (the other is white) which plugged into the pump towards the rear of the car (vs the white one near the rear of the back seat). Are you totally confused? Anyhow, how do I know which one I need to replace?
