I did check the CV boots, and the outer ones looked pretty new. The whole reason I did the ball joints/ tie rods was that I had the car up anyway to replace the _inner_ tripod joint boot on the driver's side of the car (the opposite side from where the noise seems to be emanating). I was fortunate to catch it early, and it seemed to be an age related crack.

The outer cv boots looked OK, even like they might have been fairly recently replaced, but I suppose there's no telling if the previous owner just put new boots over already shot joints.


I'll try your suggestion and see what I find.
