Calling all car stereo gurus - do I have bad amp?

I am baffled by the audio system in my '96 CS, which isn't surprising since I know next to nothing about car stereos.. I have the Clarion cassette deck like everyone else, no in-dash CD player or trunk-mounted changer, and the amp under the passenger seat. The HU powers up, it is fully illuminated, and all the buttons (presets, tuning, etc.) all work. The antenna also goes up and down. One small problem - no sound. At all.

I pulled the HU and found the two square plugs that were firmly in place, and what I think was the antenna wire also in place. I had my *A-ha* moment when I found a round, multi-pin connector that was unplugged, dangling behind the console. I thought that would solve the problem, I plugged it in - nothing. The one difference is that now I can hear that faint "pop" noise you hear when you first turn on any stereo system. I pulled the passenger seat and checked the amp, it appeared fine with one big connector plugged into the side. Checked the rear speakers, they appear to be fine as well with good connections. So I have a stereo system that appears to be functioning properly except the minor issue of no actual sound. Any thoughts? Is there a mute button I'm missing?
