Ring shouldn't be too tight. I always lube the O-ring and clean the lube the threads with Sil-Glyde before reassembling. If the pump is aligned with the index mark and won't turn it should be OK. Of course any spills you made in the area will take some time to dissipate. I'm anal about external vapors in the cabin so I always duct tape the oval hatch on all sides before reinstalling the floor.
