You might try a spray of WD-40 or a graphite lube down the key hole first. This has always worked in other older cars I've had where the switch was sticking in the 'start' position. Otherwise, yes, it's time for a new switch. It won't hurt to drive it as long as you make absolutely sure it's not still in 'start' with the starter engaged. It's very easy to forget to do this - after all how long have you been starting cars without even thinking about this - so it's probably a wise idea to get things sorted asap.
