Brake caliper slide bolt - repairing threads Posted by Henry Helfman [Email] (#787) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Henry Helfman) on Mon, 27 Oct 2008 08:18:05 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Last Saturday my Meyle wheel bearing failed again, again. Despite the frustration of having to replace it at short notice (and paying retail), I buckled down and did it for the 3rd time in 3 years. I can now do the entire job in about 15 minutes but my confidence caused me to rush the reassembly and I foolishly cross-threaded one of the caliper slide pin bolts into the caliper carrier.
I re-tapped the carrier and had to re-dye the threads on the pin to get it to thread back in smoothly. The pin isn't straight anymore but should last until I can replace it.
The pin/carrier is an unusual thread- M9 * 1.25
Most standard tap sets do not have odd metric sizes (what I had) so I had to purchase a more extensive metric set.
Immediately a 15 minute job became a 1 day job. Lesson learned
I am really only posting for the archive because I was unable to find this when I searched for the answer before figuring it out myself over the weekend.
