On my search for a good used 9K with auto trans, I traveled nearly an hour each way to look at one, made sure that it would be stone cold before I examined it, and, sure 'nuff, noticed that the overflow reservoir was empty,
had the owner fill it to above the min mark, (it took about a quart to get it there) started it, and saw a plume of steamy exhaust out of the tailpipe, which cleared up after a minute or so as it warmed up.
Took it out on the road, the water temp went nearly up to the red(!) before the thermostat opened and noticed some loud clunks from a couple of different areas of the car, a repeatable click upon opening the passenger window, a mild squeak from the tranny when 3rd gear engaged from 2nd, and more...
Stopped in the middle of the drive to check the water level, and it had lowered about 20 oz from the start, added to the res. min line again. Back at the seller's place, it was empty again.
I suspect the turbo, as it seemed a bit jerky in operation.
No visible leaks under the car.
The seller was asking 4800. for this car, 'in excellent condition', even with the driver's front corner lens broken, with bumper slightly skewed. I think that it may be a 'mechanic's special' now.
Any thoughts about other possibilities?
Thanks for your input.
