There's lots to check on, but the '96-'98 9Ks are the best of the bunch.
Get a good overview at quasimotors.com.
Tell us more about the car, mileage, condition, etc., and we can help you more. Basically, look for the same stuff you would on any car (brakes, tires, shocks, serp belt & pulleys, hoses, clutch, radiator, water pump, battery, etc), then there are a few Saab 9K things to know about: heater core, DI, turbo system, engine mounts.
These are great cars, and a good one can be a real prize.
