It sounds like a good idea, but would there be issues with insurance if it's not certified (e.g. VESC Regulation V-5) for a given load rating?
Our 9000 hitch (1.25" receiver) is a simple plate that bolts onto the rear hook mounting and the bumper; it works fine for our ~1000 Lb load. but the Draw-Tite one I got for our 9-5 is an enormous (`30 LB)welded assembly that spans about 4 feet. With 3500 Lb capacity, way in excess of Saab's 1000 LB limit without brakes, it seems like overkill, but I guess it's best to be safe.
Another use for a receiver is to use an aluminum Hitch Haul for light, bulky loads.. much less drag than anything on the roof.
