Noticed that a cv boot was compromised on my 97 9000t
read the board and decided that replacing the axle was the way to go.
Wrong
went to napa and asked for an axle 63$ + core which I thought was reasonable at the time. looked at the part, which looked ok and was made in germany..
pulled old axle out one of the bearings popped off, but no big deal since I have a reman one..
examined the new and old axle next to each other, same length
put new axle into wheel bearing, it was really tight, had to use a hammer to get it so I could thread the big nut on, was thinking that I was glad I would probably never have to take it apart again.
WRONG
the triple bearings were too large to go into the inner driver.
I ended up having to take both axles apart and put my old one back in using the boot from the new one...
if I ever have to do it again I will replace only the boot.
it is really easy.
1) remove wheel
2) remove 2 nuts and bolts from strut
3) remove abs sensor
4) cut bands around cv boots
5) remove 3 nuts and bolts from lower ball joint
6) pull wheel/brake assemlby so axle drops down under the car so you have access to it
7) put the 3 nuts and bolts back in the lower ball joint
8) use a puller to pull the triple bearings off the axle
9) slip off old boots and replace with new ones as needed
10) replace the 2 bolts into strut so you can tap the triple bearing back onto the axle
11) pull the 2 strut bolts back out and the 3 ball joint nuts and bolts
so you can pull the assmbly out enough to slip the whole thing back in
replace nuts, bolts cv boot bands, abs sensor wheel, and you are done
