Valve cover vacuum attachment

Greetings everyone,
I recently went for inspection on my 1996 Saab 9000 CS, and was annoyed at myself after failing on multiple points. I was able to replace most of the burned out bulbs (though neither of my high beams/dipped lights are working even after changing, but that is another story).
One of the problems noted was my PCV valve. I recently had repairs done at the shop where the mechanic mentioned doing valve-related work (I generally trust mechanics to do the right thing and do not check on their work). When I opened the hood to change the bulbs, I was surprised to see that the vacuum fitting on the upper left corner of the valve cover was apparently an amorphous mass of rubbery substance to which the two vacuum lines were connected (including the hose with the check valve/PCV valve). I assume that this mess was what prevented my car from passing inspection.
My question is: Is the fitting something that can be replaced, or will I need to replace the whole valve cover? They run about $200, so I would prefer to avoid it if I can. If the fitting itself can be replaced, does anyone have suggestions on part description/where I can find them.
Thanks for any help,
Ryan
