clutch pedal to the floor!!! Posted by Daven [Email] (#290) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Daven) on Mon, 22 Dec 2008 16:59:07 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My clutch pedal is on the floor and will not regain pressure with any amount of pumping.
The clutch fluid seems a little low; about a half inch below the fill line on the reservoir, but I cannot remember whether it was low before this happened. There doesn't seem to be any fluid on the carpet under the master cylinder. The slave cylinder was replaced a little over a year ago and the car has been infrequently since, roughly 7,000 miles. The Master cylinder is roughly 5 years old and has 60,000+ miles and, as far as I know, the clutch line has never been replaced. My engine compartment is too dirty to see whether the clutch line has a leak and has sprayed fluid.
For the past year or two, occasionally I would start the car and find the clutch pedal on the floor, but pumping the pedal for 10 to 20 minutes would bring it back to full pressure. I found that this only occurred when I had depressed the clutch pedal while the engine was off...hours before or the day before. This made the problem seem like an air leak, like the seals of the master cylinder had allowed air to seep into the line while the engine was off and unable to maintain the pressure in the system.
I cannot afford to just take this to my local dealer and let them take hours to diagnose the problem and then charge me a premium on parts to fix it. Should I just buy a new master cylinder ($125) and clutch hose ($60) and install myself. I am fairly capable in DIY repairs, having done 3 9000 engine overhauls, head-jobs and transmission swaps before.
BIG QUESTION: How do I bleed the clutch once I install these parts?
THANKS!
