Good point - I missed the '5sp', and got caught up in the red herring of clock issues with the key.
There is a mechanism in the key tumbler to prevent removing it while the key is in any position other than OFF. That's to keep the key from being removed while driving, a curious trait of older cars and very interesting if the steering column were to lock up. It is possible that the removal mechanism is getting hung up. Not an ignition switch problem.
It would be interesting to see if the key was easier to remove if the steering wheel is moved slightly while pulling out the key. It is possible that due to wear, the steering column lock mechanism is mechanically loading the key. By holding the wheel against the pressure, the key might come out easily.
