My 97 Aero just went over 300K miles on the original transmission. It was factory filled with the new Saab synthetic fluid and has been changed roughly every 75K with the last change about 5K miles ago. Smooth shifts with no issues and obviously the longevity of the transmission has not been affected. If the car has original factory fill, then I recommend sticking with it.

If anything else is used, be sure to follow the advice above and do a thorough flush prior to final fill. BTW - the new Saab fluid MTF00063(by GM) is not compatible with the original Saab synthetic and if it is used a flush is recommended. Lots of posts on this issue and Saab even released a bulletin to the same effect. I've so far been able to buy the older synthetic fluid, but its getting harder to find.
