you have the fancier ACC vs the dial manual heat controls, right? that finned thing is the transistorized speed control. lots here about fixing it.
I too had burned wires. Bought a foot or so of wire with the connector and a used speed control. There's 2 thick black wires that go to the connector. If you reverse these (no visible indication which is which) the fan only runs on high! Months later I was looking at a schematic and noticed this. Switched the wires, works fine now. Just FYI.
