Broken Bracket, rear of engine to tranny, essential?

There is a cast aluminum bracket bolted to the rear passenger side of the engine. The bracket appears to go to the tranny where the axle shaft comes out on the passenger, right, side.
The auto transmission was rebuilt last week and the mechanic broke it off. He said it was already mostly broken and hanging by only a small bit of metal.
If I don't replace it, will that cause anything bad to happen?
Will that cause something to go bad in the next 50k to 100k miles?
I drive my '96 9kCS with 145k miles every day.
Thank you for any prompt answer on this before I destroy something.
