Plugs, fluid, tires Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Tue, 20 Jan 2009 06:06:51 In Reply to: Perfect instructions. Showed my daughters, Noel, Mon, 19 Jan 2009 15:18:24 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My father-in-law (long before he was my father-in-law) wouldn't let my wife (long before she was my wife) get her license until she could change a spark plug, check and add fluids if necessary (coolant, oil), and change a tire.
So if a tire blew, she could replace it. She learned that she needed a big breaker bar, but one travels in the car now. When she had a VW Dasher that drank oil at the rate of a quart every hour (~ 50 miles, but the odo was broken), she traveled with a case of oil, and could keep the level up. Many a 'helpful' male came by to help out the poor darling in adding oil - she learned to shoo them away, because most ended up pouring more oil on the exhaust manifold than in the engine. And she knew not to add coolant to a hot engine - something her male cousin found out the hard way - luckily, no scarring.
Not everyone needs to be able to field-strip a TCS intake manifold blindfolded, but if you have keys in your hand, you should know the basics of keeping the wet parts wet, the sparky bits sparking, and the black things full of air.
