Hey swedespeed, you should be able to inspect that area without removing the headliner at all. The plastic bulkhead holding the "Fasten Belts" light and map light is easily removed. If you slide back the door that's on it, it's held in by one screw; after its removal, gently press the bulkhead forward and it'll come off. Under it is the sunroof motor, which is held into metal brackets on the roof by three long Phillips screws.
The sunroof motor is pretty solid, and shouldn't rattle if it's all working and screwed tightly to its brackets. On one side of the headliner where it meets the bulkhead, there is a white plastic liner - perhaps it's come loose? Also, it's possible that the cylindrical Fasten Belts bulb has come loose as well, or the bulkhead needs to be screwed in tighter.
Hope all of that helped! On the 9000 you thankfully only need to remove the headliner to recover it - you can replace the sunroof motor and rebuild the whole sunroof without touching the headliner. Ask me how I know!
