first, even in cold weather our AC compress clutch engages shortly after starting. This is your first sign there is an acceptable amount of refrigerant in the system. If there was not then the low pressure switch would not permit the compressor clutch to engage.

To be honest unless you have gauges this is the best guess you will get till warm weather hits. They other trick is to use a infrared gun and point it into your center vent with the AC on high in a warm garage or warm day. My Passat TDI gets well below 32F without frosting while our 9000 never gets below 40F and I've rebuilt many "things" on it.

With a set of gauges you can tell the real "health" of the system of what is going on with high side and low side pressure. I used to have some great 101 reference stuff but I don't think it's on my website at the moment. YOu can always send me a PM and I'll dig deep if you really are in the mood for some DIY AC work with a $40 set of gauges from harbor freight.
