Bilsteins get a bad rap. They are a great replacement and they fit the nature of the car very well. Yes, they will feel very firm on all low speed bumps; driveways, speed bumps, potholes, etc. On everything else, they ride quite smoothly.
Yes, it's totally possible that your struts are blown at over 100K. They just don't last forever on these heavy cars. Personally, I wouldn't consider them for a replacement. Just get the Bilstein HD along with the upper strut bearings and don't look back.
