I bought my Aero at 145K with that same issue. Sometimes it would go into Reverse like normal; other times it refused any finesse of effort to reach that gear. I'd end up having to select a forward gear then go directly for Reverse. The shop that did my PPI informed me of the issue, but the car was so clean I bought it anyway. The trans did fail 60K later though.

Yes a repair can be costly. No I can't say it's a DIY. Yes you can use a zip tie or two on the shift coupler (good luck reaching it), but it may not be the solution for your issue. Just drive it until it sounds like rocks are in the trans and then buy a new one.

IF you decide to have it rebuilt, I'd reccomend reading up on what exactly gets replaced on rebuilds. I was not happy that my $1000 rebuilt box had a notchy 3rd gear syncro (must have passed visual inspection) as well as having an "almost ready to fail" $20 internal speedo gear. Thanks to the internal gear, I'm on my 3rd trans.
