How to cure a rough idle?

My 1995 Aero will be steady at about 800 revs then suddenly dip like it's going to stall. Typically it doesn't stall, but it comes close. This can happen without any apparent change in load; just sitting at a light in neutral. I've been driving the car for years so I'm used to it, but I'm trying to teach my son how to drive it so I can hand the car over to him. Needless to say, he has enough to think about just learning the 5-speed and doesn't need a false stall in the middle of trying to launch into an intersection.

What are the best first steps toward a steady idle?
