As Burt notes, that sounds like a bad lower mount. Checking the mounts is pretty easy with an automatic. Open the hood, then get back into the car and start it. With the parking brake on and your foot firmly on the brake, shift into reverse, then neutral, then drive, while peeking at the top of the engine you can see below the hood. The engine should move forward, center, back, as you move the shifter. then engine should move only about a half inch or so, maybe a little more. If it moves a lot, if it jiggles a bit before settling down, suspect the lower mounts.
The best way to check the mounts with the fender inner liner off is to stick a crowbar between the engine and the sub-frame at the mount, and lift. With a bad mount, the center of the mount will actually lift out of the rest of the mount. If the mount stays in one piece, it's OK. You're not trying to stretch it, just move it a half inch or so.
Yes, putting the bushing in takes an amazing amount of force. There is a reason why the proper method is to use an arbor press in a machine shop - a couple /three tons of pressure should do it. I've given up on using the tools - I've snapped too many, stripped threads, etc. I just unbolt the whole thing, and bring it to a machine shop.
